Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at Fordham High School for the Arts

Social Emotional Learning (SEL), as defined by CASEL, is built on five key components:

  • Self-awareness: Understanding one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values, and recognizing how they influence behavior across different situations.

  • Self-management: Effectively managing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to achieve personal goals and aspirations in various contexts.

  • Social awareness: Appreciating the perspectives of others, empathizing across diverse backgrounds, cultures, and environments.

  • Relationship skills: Building and maintaining healthy, supportive relationships while navigating diverse social settings.

  • Responsible decision-making: Making thoughtful, caring, and constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions in varied situations.

At FHSA, we are dedicated to helping students become emotionally literate. Developing emotional literacy equips our scholars with the tools to:

  • Utilize healthy methods of de-escalation

  • Develop effective coping strategies
