Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS)

A framework to provide all students with the best opportunities for academic and behavioral success in school. Multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) focuses on providing high-quality instruction and interventions matched to student need and monitoring progress to make decisions about changes in instruction. Our school counseling program provides students with a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) in the form of academic interventions for all students.

MTSS: Tier 1

In a MTSS framework, Tier 1 supports are intended to prevent challenges from occurring in the first place. In our school-wide supports it is estimated that a majority of students (80-90%) will respond positively. In our school students receive the following Tier 1 supports:

  • Classroom push-in lessons that teach critical social and behavioral skills

  • Wellness Wednesday events that promote mental health awareness and coping strategies.

  • Strong Resilient Curriculum- Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, Goal-Directed Behavior, Personal Responsibility, Decision Making, and Optimistic Thinking.

MTSS: Tier 2

In a MTSS framework, Tier 2 supports are intended for some students who have been identified by teachers or other stakeholders in need of additional supports. These students may exhibit difficulties with learning specific academic content or following rules more often than their peers, causing delays in instruction and/or behavior problems. Our Tier 2 supports include:

  • Small group counseling

  • One-to-One counseling

  • Peer-to-Peer support

MTSS: Tier 3

In a MTSS framework, Tier 3 supports are intended for a few students. Usually these students, with serious and chronic needs, will receive individualized services from the school counselor. Our Tier 3 supports:

  • Individual counseling

  • Outside referrals
